Jacob Shiver III was born abt. 1814, probably near Camden, Kershaw District, South Carolina. He was the 3rd child of John Jackson Shiver and Sara Ann SWILLEY.
Jacob's first wife is unknown to us at this time. They were probably married abt. 1835 in Alabama. The known children of this couple are:
- Sarah, b. abt. 1837, d. 1909. (Married Mr. KING).
- Gilley. (Married Mr. BARTLETT).
It is presumed that Jacob's first wife died, after which he married Catherine May COOPER. They were married 2 Nov 1848 prob. in Coffee Co., Alabama. To this marriage was born 6 known children:
- Permelian or Milly, b. abt. 1849.
- Samuel T., b. 16 Feb 1850, d. 3 Apr 1924. (Married Sumter Annie TULLY.)
- Thomas John, b. abt. 1853.
- Dorcas Emaline, b. abt. 1855.
- Catherine Frances, b. abt. 1857.
- Mary Elizabeth Salany, b. abt. 1857. (Married John Gilbert HALL).

Jacob's death is noted in the 1860 Federal Census Mortality Schedules as follows: Jacob SHIVER - 47, married, died Dec 1860 after being ill with consumption for 265 days. (Given when his will was probated, and the fact that mortality schedules for 1850 were compiled from June 1859 through June 1860, I think this date is in error and should be Dec 1859.) Jacob's will was presented in Coffee County, Alabama on 25 Jan 1860, thereby setting his death date as Dec 1859.
