Mikhail Kin KOZACHENKO
(1880-1947)

Mikhail Kin "Mike" KOZACHENKO was born 4 Sep 1880 in Tarascha, Kyiv Oblast, Ukraine. At the time, the Ukraine was still part of the Russian Empire. He served for a time in the Ruso-Japanese War and was apparently injured in battle. According to family stories, he left Russia as soon as he could be released from the Russian Army.

He wanted to marry Steppa or Steffa "Stacie" BOSTOW, whose parents were immigrating to America. He evidently decided to go with them. I don't believe (though I do not have proof yet), that they were able to leave the Ukraine together. I believe that Stacie's family left first, and then Mikhail followed when he could get out of the army. Where they met up is still a mystery, though I suspect it was in Europe or England.

He left Russia in the spring of 1906, and he and Stacie were evidently married sometime just prior to this, or wherever it was they managed to meet up. They sailed together on a ship from Liverpool, England to Quebec, Canada between May 1906 and June 1906. I am in possession of the transcript of their ship voyage, and will add this to the web site later.

Upon arriving in Quebec, they immediately embarked on a rail journey to Portal, North Dakota, where they entered the United States. Their travels brought them to the Garrison/Benedict area of McLean County, North Dakota, where Mikhail homesteaded on a parcel of land there.

Mike and Stacie had 9 children, all born in Greatstone Township, McLean County, North Dakota:

  1. Andrew, b. 8 Jan 1908, d. 5 Jan 1987.
  2. Mary, b. 11 Mar 1910, d. 24 Jul 1910.

  4. Edward, b. 14 Jun 1913, d. 20 May 1986.
